This is the Capercaillie which we had the pleasure of finding in the Scottish Highlands; our guide for this special moment was Neil McIntyre. We did have a bit of a hike up through the woods but it was so worth it... I would of walked half a day to meet this wonderful bird.... and when I came eye to eye with him he was HUGE lol!!! This is full frame with a bit of work in PS. Oh and I think this bird featured in David Attenborough's top five moments; it has ATTITUDE !! Ok here is some info from the RSPB site... sadly this bird is near extinction AGAIN!
A huge woodland grouse, the large black males are unmistakable. They spend a lot of time feeding on the ground, but may also be found in trees, feeding on shoots. localised breeding species, found in Scottish native pinewood, a rare and vulnerable habitat, and in commercial conifer plantations. The UK capercaillie population has declined so rapidly that it is at very real risk of extinction (for the second time) and is a 'Red List' species.
