This image was captured in January when the Pacific Northwest finally got a break in the weather. It had been raining and freezing intermittently right up to the day before, and right after I took this photograph it started snowing, so needless to say, it was a cold day. Only the most dedicated of surfers (including ambitious beginners who came to learn the sport in the relative privacy that freezing winter waters provide at this latitude) were willing to wiggle into their wetsuits, load up their boards and come out to play in the chilly but calm surf.

This is Indian Beach, whose beauty can expand your heart to the bursting point, and on a rare day when nature has switched from angry shouting to a whisper of peace.

I was down on the beach, looking around and waiting for the sun to drop down closer to the horizon when I turned and saw these two surfers in what seemed to be a shared state of awe.

I was disappointed that the image came out with so much graininess and noise in it, and that the color was so weak - just a few pale streaks of blue and orange in the sky - but these are pretty much a given on a hazy day with the kind of thin, diffused light that we get all winter long in these parts. Rendering in mono solved a multitude of problems.
