As this lake near Whitehorse began to freeze in early November, windy conditions splashed water on the branches of a submerged dead tree. In the sub-zero temperatures, ice-mushrooms eventually formed on the branches. The lake then froze over, and with no snow, created this unusual scene just before dark, a rare occurrence. One from the archives, I saw these being formed yesterday at this same spot with wave action on a windy day, but doubt that conditions will ever come together like this again.
