This was one of those times when I had to give up on my original plan and seize the moment. I drove around for hours trying to find a particular type of foggy scene that I had in mind, but the fog kept rising and lowering wildly, and it was really hard to find the right combination of features and elevation. It started to look as though I would have nothing at all to shoot until I drove up to the highest location I could find and spotted a hill with a west-facing clearing that looked to be about level with the fog. I wasn't sure what I would be able to see from there, but it was my only hope. By the time I navigated to the hill and hiked to the clearing, the fog had consumed much of the visible world, and the sky was absolutely ablaze with color. I was suddenly quite happy to let happenstance rule the day.
