My trip from Espot up to the Refugi d'Amitges was a long uphill "climb" through beautiful dense pine and fir forests with the occasional meadow filled with sweet scented wildflowers and clear creeks, gushing with water from the snow-melt. At 2,400m, the scenery started to change from a colorful spring/early alpine summer to the remnants of a long and deep winter. This warm sunset over the still snow-covered high-country of the Pyrenees, just as the lakes were starting to thaw out from their icy winter grave, was a wonderful welcome to my trip. The sun set over the steep climb up to Port de Ratera, a winding route up to the pass; that was lined with radiant neret (rhododendron) blooms the year before, on this exact date. What difference a year makes...
