Seis minaretes coronan la mezquita, que tiene una estructura que la convierte en la más elegante de la ciudad. Las cuatro galerías del pórtico están cubiertas por 30 cúpulas que se apoyan sobre 26 columnas de mármol, granito y porfirio.
Pero lo mejor es su interior. Cuando penetramos en ella, como manda la tradición islámica, con los hombros cubiertos y descalzos, lo primero que sentimos es la gran alfombra que cubre todo el espacio de la mezquita. Su limpieza es exhaustiva, ya que casi en todos los momentos podemos ver a un encargado limpiándola una y otra vez. No hay imágenes o estatuas dentro de la mezquita, puesto que la religión Islámica prohíbe la idolatría.
Luego nuestra vista se levanta hacia el techo de la mezquita, hacia la cúpula central. Y, por último notamos algo que nos rodea, una luz con una tonalidad azul, muy suave. 260 ventanales, que se alinean en cinco niveles permiten una filtración de la luz irrepetible, reflejándola en los 21.043 azulejos usados en su construcción, de color azul. De ahí el nombre que se le da a esta mezquita.
El arquitecto Mehmet Aga (apodado "Sedefkar"), construyó esta maravilla entre 1609 y 1616, en la época final de esplendor del Imperio Otomano.
