while we were in SoCal we took an evening harbor cruise on a gorgeous 90 year old yacht named the Zumbrota. the Zumbrota was originally commissioned and owned by the Ringling Brothers. it also served briefly in WW1 as a PT boat and, although i can't substantiate this claim, was supposedly owned for a while by Mae West. whatever her past, this boat has been beautifully restored.

this is looking aft. it's a nearly one half second exposure, hand-held, after several whiskey and cokes. i was kicking myself for not bringing a tripod with me but i wanted this shot and wasn't going to be denied. i think i took this one two dozen times, each shot getting progressively blurrier. until for some strange moment, everything came together and i was able to hold my breath and become motionless for the half second i needed. there's a minor contrast and curves adjust done in PS, but it's otherwise just as it came out of the camera. i think this is one of my favorite pictures i've ever taken.
