Nick, just do it, it can be frustrating, at least at the beginning, howver the results can be rewarding. For close-ups and up to 1:1 magnification any macro rail is good enough, for magnifications above 1:1 a micrometer with a linear stage is preferable. My favorite macro rail for the moment is a cannibalized velbon super mag slider, I use only the lower(shorter) part of the rail. Regarding software Combine ZM is quite good and free.

Justin, it took a couple of failed series until i got it right, not an easy task under field conditions but manageable.

Really great shot, wonderful DOF (I'm amazed you were able to stack so many exposures without it moving!). I like how the background is visible in the largest water drop.
