Hallstatt está situada en el distrito montañoso de Salzkammergut en Austria. Localizada cerca del lago Hallstätter See; lo forma el río Traun, afluente del río Danubio y está repleto de peces multicolores.
Etimológicamente el nombre de Hall probablemente proviene del término céltico con el que se denominaba a la sal, abundante en las minas cercanas.
La localidad da su nombre a la cultura de la edad de Hierro, denominada Cultura de Hallstatt.
Hasta el siglo XIX la única posibilidad de llegar a la localidad era en barco o por senderos estrechos. La tierra entre las montañas y el lago era escasa siendo esta poca tierra ocupada por la población misma. El acceso entre las casas y la orilla del lago se realizaba a través de una pasarela elevada sobre los áticos de las viviendas. El primer camino importante se construyó en 1890 por la parte oeste a través de la roca.
No obstante en este paraje aislado e inhospitalario se establecieron uno de los primeros asentamientos humanos gracias a los yacimientos de sal. Mina de Sal (Salzwelten Hallstatt): se dice que es la más vieja del mundo, con 7.000 años de explotación. Se llega a ella a pie o con un moderno funicular (abierto solo desde finales de abril hasta el 26 de octubre).
En 1997 fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.
Un lugar idílico, maravilloso... un sueño cumplido, un regalo para los sentidos... realmente las palabras no pueden describir tan mágico lugar... hay que estar ahí, sentirlo y disfrutarlo...

The town gives its name to the culture of the Iron Age, called Hallstatt culture.
Until the nineteenth century the only way to reach the town was by boat or narrow paths. The land between the mountains and the lake was low this little land being occupied by the town itself. The access between the houses and the lake was done through an elevated walkway over the attics of the houses. The first major road was built in 1890 by the west through the rock.
However, in this isolated and inhospitable landscape is established one of the earliest human settlements due to the salt deposits. Salt Mine (Hallstatt Salzwelten) is said to be the oldest salt mine in the world, with 7,000 years of exploitation. It can be reached on foot or by a modern funicular (open from late April until 26 October).
In 1997 he was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
