These lizards live only on the islands of Galapagos. They are threatened to be extinct, classified vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The population on the islands is estimated to be between 5,000 and 10,000. When Darwin found these reptiles the first time, he wrote that he could not "for some time find a spot free [...] to pitch our single tent". Recovery efforts however seem to kick in.
