He did leave New Orleans after Katrina...to move to Los Angeles! The New Orleans celebration was not his actual funeral. That was in August 2010. The event in New Orleans was November 6, 2010 . I was notified of the event, but couldn't make my schedule work to fly down to New Orleans.

In his youth Herman apprenticed to a man who was arguably the all time greatest portrait photographer. Yousuf Karsh. I encourage anyone who loves Jazz music or portrait photography to do a google image search on these two men.
And perhaps to listen to this address made by Herman when he was invited to be commencement speaker at his alma mater Ohio State University in 2009.
