My entry for last week’s 'The Word of the Week Competition' with Simon Cox (http://500px.com/digitalsights) and John Cox (http://500px.com/JohnCox).
The word was 'Loses'.
We'd been planning a trip to the Auburn Rodeo for a few weeks, and having been before I was expecting an easy time with this week’s word. Nith and I went 3 years ago and not a single bull rider managed to hold on for the 8 seconds required to score points.
This year the riders were having a better time of it, and non scoring rides were the exception. I took a few hundred pictures but only a handful of true 'unplanned' dismounts. I grabbed a picture of a bull landing on it's rider, but I wasn't happy with the clarity and composition of the image. Whilst it was shocking in person, the lack of the faces of the crowds or action from the support crew due to my tight crop meant I chose this shot instead. Seconds after the gate was opened the rider was tipped back, almost back in to the gate. I love the horse’s expression and the looks of concentration and action on those surrounding the rider. Everyone on that field works HARD in 80+ degree heat.
The Word of the Week is decided by the first (usable) word in the top headline on the BBC News page at 8am (GMT) on a Monday.
