Catching a fish-and keeping it-isn't easy in the osprey's world. As soon as an osprey pulls a fish out of the water it may be pursued by another, who will attempt to steal it. Not only are other ospreys a threat, but also local eagles, who will occasionally try to steal a fish. In this photo two ospreys are after the fish, which the osprey, just minutes before, caught in the James River, Newport News, Virginia. The ospreys return to this same location every year to fish as migrating shad return to the James River.

Here both ospreys have their claws in the same fish...who will be the victor? It looks like a tie at this point.
