The pink clouds lingered about 30 to 60 minutes longer than a typical sunset, due to really clear air out to the Pacific horizon that day (this definitely wouldn't happen in the summer). The stars were from a separate exposure about a half hour later than the rest of the image, without moving the camera - then I overlaid them on the main image. The stars actually were starting to come out at the time of the main exposure, but not bright enough for the camera to convey/capture effectively.
