A still photo I took at the Atchafalaya Basin, a beautiful, primordial swamp in southern Louisiana. I spent a week filming on this bayou for Godfrey Reggio's new Untitled feature film, but I would like to have spent months there. I often think about and dream about returning there soon. The moment you step into the boat, you are transported to another time and place, so far removed from modern life that it's tough to really even describe it.
This lovely scene belies the fact that much of this basin has been destroyed and raped by oil and logging companies. It is under grave threat even as we speak. I spent a day on the eastside of the basin with the "Keeper of the Basin", Dean Wilson, an extraordinary man who is fighting to preserve and protect this magical place. Dean lives an extremely humble life, with his young family living in a muddy little moss-covered shack on the water. He spends all his time fighting against the lumber and oil companies.
