Morning light warms the landscape around the small Yorkshire village of Birstwith and the spire of St James Church. This small village boasts less than 1000 residents and has been here in Nidderdale since at least the 1700s. It seems to have been developed around a mill on the River Nidd but local lore has it that there was once coal mining in the Hampsthwaite region. No evidence of a coal mining industry remains as far as anyone can tell so the veracity of those claims is unproven.
