Kittiwake, Larus tridactyla. Image taken on Mumbles Pier, Swansea, Wales, UK. A small colony of Kittiwakes breeds and nests each year on the local pier and is very used to fishermen being nearby which allows a very close approach to the birds. The image was taken on a cloudy day that has turned the out of focus sea a uniform grey in the background. This individual had been perching on the remains of the pier railings above it's partner on the nest, when it turned to stare at me. It is not a usual angle to see of a gull, plus the piercing eyes attracted me. Camera was supported on a Gitzo 1541 tripod and a Wimberely gimbal head attached
