A friend and I were with our families at a beach in Dana Point, California yesterday afternoon when, less than a hundred feet from where we were, came ashore this creature with a lost look on its face. We learned, from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center volunteers that came an hour after this picture was taken, that this was a northern elephant seal pup about only a couple months old. It definitely was lost and must have wandered hundreds of miles from one of the offshore island seal colonies off the coast of Southern California. The pup was taken to a rescue center where it will be evaluated and nourished for several weeks before being sent back to sea.
