These two cubs climbed up a tree growing on a steep bank. Once they got to the fork, I think both were surprised how high they had ventured. They meowed in distress to the mother, who seemed relatively unconcerned but summoned them back with reassuring grunts. The cub peering down took the initiative and little growler followed close behind. Low contented moans followed when they reached terra firma, and I’m sure I’d have heard purring if I’d been closer. These two learnt their survival lesson for the day quickly - that although they have spots, they really are lions, not leopards! Masai Mara, Kenya
