Opted for the HDR approach here due to the extreme dynamic range in the scene, it is still not quite as what I wanted it to be like but I reckon the 550D has done a decent job here.
I will be visiting this lavender field again shortly as I would prefer a better sunset than this, plus the rather large flare is annoying! :(
