The prison was built in 1829 and was the largest and most expensive public structure in the country. The penitentiary resembles a hub-and-spoke consisting of an octagonal center connected by corridors to seven cell blocks. Each block contains cells that were 8 x 12 feet. As I walked through the penitentiary, I thought about the convicts that were sentenced for 10-20 years and how terrifying it was. I’d probably go bonkers after 10-20 minutes.
This particular image was a cell block of the non-public part of the penitentiary.
