This young elephant waded into the water and drank like a buffalo – with its mouth. This is because its trunk, which had probably been severed by a poacher’s wire snare, was only a few inches long and therefore totally ineffective. At shallow pools this youngster would have to kneel down to drink, and could only eat plants that were within its limited reach. Poaching for bushmeat is rife in some African countries, and because snares are not species specific, many non-target animals such as big cats and large herbivores are also maimed or killed by this inhumane and indiscriminate practice.
