Smoke from a nearby forest fire, triggered by a lightning strike, in combination with the colors of sunset enwraps Crater Lake in Oregon in a dreamy mood. The catastrophic eruption of the stratovolcano Mt. Mazama 6900 years ago completely emptied the volcanoes interior. The emptied mountain of 13000 ft (4000m) height gravitationally collapsed into this 5 miles (8 km) wide by 6 miles (10 km) long (30 mi2, 80 km²) big Crater Lake caldera in Oregon. The present day brink of the volcano at 7200 ft (2200 m) height is located 2000 ft (600 m) above the lake level. As the lake is also 2000 ft (600 m) deep, the caldera has a total depth of 4000 ft (1200 m).
