This area is known for its colorful pools formed by calcite deposits, especially in Huanglonggou (Yellow Dragon Gully). "Huanglong" in Chinese means yellow dragon because it looks like dragon lying across high mountain valley.
The scenic pools is 3.6Km long and fall over 400m in height. Today you can save your energy for getting to this beautiful view by using cable car and walk down along the trail to the colorful ponds and slowly walk up to this viewpoint. You have to spare at least 6 hours for walking in this valley and should aware of altitude sickness because it is around 3,600 meters above sea level. I used to run down this trail and suffered from such terrible sickness.
Huanglong was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992.
