South African Red Bull Kayaker, Steve Fisher, paddles through a kaleidoscope of foam patterns on the Black River in Northern Michigan, after dropping numerous waterfalls upstream. The Black River flows into Lake Superior and is known for its beautiful waterfalls. The foam that Fisher is paddling through is created by water aeration and the patterns are created by water currents.
Foam (bubbles) forms when air mixes with the interacting water and a foaming agent. Foaming agents can be made by natural processes including autumn leaves that fall into lakes or streams and decay. The process of decay releases organic substances, such as fatty acids, similar to compounds that produce bubbles in soaps and detergents.
