I completely agree with you, a car design is more subjective than car performance. Why does it happen this? Because we tend to see / buy the packaging, not the content of an object. We like the color, the form, the look of a car more than we like what it is under the hood. If I had some Discount Auto Parts for a similar car, I would buy this model car.
