I have spied this location from the Virginia side of the park for many days now and after shooting my ‘Summer Wind’ photo, I seriously looked into making my way into the falls from the Maryland side. My only concern was it was totally exposed to the Park Rangers whistling me off the rocks. My first day down was Sunday, on July 8th and as I was waiting in hiding from view, several kayakers came by and were ready to hit the falls. We set up for some shots of them coming down and by the time we said our goodbyes, I was totally confident the Rangers would not force me to leave. Sunset on the first day was totally boring but I vow I would return to this place for the next 3-4 days for sunset because I was totally flabbergasted by the beauty of the Falls from the Maryland side.
Monday bought clouds, which I thought had potential to make for a fantastic sunset. Mother Nature delivered for me but I royally screwed this one up. After getting this shot ‘Hold Back the Night’, I packed up because the lights just turned out and I headed back up the cliffs. By the time I got to the top and looked back, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The whole sky was just solid brilliant crimson and I stared in amazement at the same time wishing I had a little more patience on this day. Lessons learned today.
