Salgado is more than a photographer. Actually, more than an artist. he is an humanist.
his photographies portray the human condition at its extremes, at its tragedies. His images became limestones of the humanitarian photography, many times used as a way to promote human rights or to draw attention to a cause.
His flawless technique creates strong images that tend to shock or warn the observer about a sorrowful reality just outside his door.
Dark tones. striking light work, psychological portraits, monochromes. every piece of his art is set to open our eyes. He was there, he lived the pain, the anguish. He want us to feel and act. Salgado worked in Brazil and outside the country, being a magnum member 'till 1994.
Nowadays, the photographer has focused on his Genesis project, a series of photos taken at unexplored, untouched places, leaving alone the human aspect of his photography. Now showing the beautiness of our world, for he couldn't afford doing the opposite anymore, in his own words.
his images, however could be both delicate or striking. complex or simple: coming from Terra or Genesis
But his signature is omnipresent: Salgado will always be the sensitive master.
photograpger's note: the image does not resembles completely the artist's work because some tributes focus on one or two of a complex array of caracteristis. I don't have salgado's exp, equipment and locations, so I had to get the best out of the street, with a small camera. being pointless to pay a tribute by copying a photographers' signature, I decided to import some of his most important ideas: his strong dark tones, humanistic narrative, the psychological aspects of the subject and his pain, pictured by the hands. there are many of his photos in which photographed people show up with their palms over their faces. they are just not well known.
