Sometimes fashion brands are ultra cool and sometimes they are trying too hard to impress. I was invited to this exhibition called Gift of Time and it was in the old Tanjong Pagar Railway station, Singapore, in the open hall area. ( that is indeed a coup!!). The exhibition is a set of artworks that require some explanation - and some one to tell you what it is all about and in inside a few tents, thankfully air conditioned.
The theme of horses, dinner, birds, time and leather, quality and chic fashion are blended in well but if you step back a bit it is forced and makes you question what the real intent is all about. For me to buy hermes?..another time may be.... I do like the hermes ties and the fragrances and that's about it...the rest of the stuff is way too overpriced and not worth it at all.....
The first exhibit of the anti clock wise rotating light and shadow was interesting, but after that it got boring where there was all these exhibits asking one to reconsider time - and it was crowded inside and I was getting claustrophobic. Ideas again picked up some momentum at the bird in a cage but before that i was again lost in some saddle and horse world and I could not tell why - My rational time mind was working again.
I also liked the gift of time see -saw and the hanging tea pots - the artist has explored some cleaver ideas and patterns and blended it well with the brand story.....but I wonder whether this will do anything at all to the brand sales or image or Hermes relationship with the people.
There is some information about the artist and the concept at Hermes (confusing?) web site and loads of PR by the people who got the freebies and canapes. You are clever - you can google and search.
The artist's information is here - http://www.hiltonmcconnico.com/
If you have nothing to do and some spare time go there and enjoy the past time and the station and kick back with a kopi C at the U cafe - and guess what I will go again and post story number 2 on the gift of time
