ShutterTales: Fast Life In The Killing Field

Published March 31st, 2012

Once a labeled as the killing field of Cebu, is now one of the busiest town in the city of Talisay. 25 years ago, this town earned the notoriety a dreaded place for summary executions. Crime rate was also an ultimate high during that period. More than a year ago, I visited the place again and had a bolt from the blue of the dramatic increase in population, mushrooming of infrastructures, bustling streets and the industrial dusts and smogs. These are just a few of the price tags brought forth by the economic upturn in the city of Talisay. It's a city that never sleeps!

This market road is a 6-lane thoroughfare that has shrunk into a barely-two-lane road. All these spaces are being eaten up by street vendors, rolling stores and wooden carts used for transporting goods between market shops. On the other side of the road became a transport terminal with vehicles parked diagonally throughout the stretch of the block. Taking photographs with your DSLR really is not a very good thing to do in this busy place because your equipment is as thief-magnet as your mobile phone. Quite a few people got killed already due to phone theft and even PSP!

On the lighter side, this small town of Tabunok boasts the best roasted pig in the country. This a place where you can find a food stall in every 2 meters with different choices of local delicacies. A few minutes away is Talisay beach. It was once famous before the shoreline was colonised by people looking for a better life.
