On a cycling tour of Southern Italy, we spend 3 days on the Island of Stromboli. Leaving Naples by Hydrofoil we arrived on the island in late afternoon (4 hour trip). The next day in late afternoon we joined a small guided tour that would take us up to the summit of the volcano to enjoy a continuous series of eruptions in early evening. We stayed at the summit for a good hour with eruptions happening every 3 to 5 minutes. It was spectacular. We descended the mountain in pitch black darkness. Frankly I found the descent to be harder than the climb. We arrived back at sea-level at around 11 pm and headed to the restaurant for pizza and beer. This trip is well worth the effort.
