A visit to Glasgow

Published April 7th, 2012

Ten years ago, I left university, Glasgow University that is. I had been there for 10 years as a student doing first a BSc with work placement in Medical Biochemistry then followed this up with a degree in Medicine. Funnily enough, I've hardly ever been back there. I guess I've got my "Uni memories" and I like to keep them separate from my post-Uni life. Anyway, now and again I do go back and since I've been into photography I have to say it's a great place to photograph.

I know that HDR isn't everyone's thing and I've been in and out the "HDR Hole" and would like to think that I made it the other side of this fairly unscathed but as with Glasgow, I like to go back there now and again. So I decided that the majority of the shots I would so would be HDR.

It would be great if I could do it as well as the famous Farbspiel who you can Google, but alas I can't. Shame but I just don't know how he finds the time to put in so much to this process. Having said that... I try. Anyway, here are the shots and I hope you like them and to the purists out there I'd say, "It's just for fun!"

Glasgow University Cloisters - again!

Some more shots from the shoot in Glasgow yesterday. The University and the surrounding West End really does have some excellent things to shoot so I would totally recommend you visit.

Glasgow University Union Debates Chamber

The GUU was one of my haunts as a younger man and I went through for a visit with the camera yesterday and some fond memories. In 2000 I was President of the Union which certainly "enriched" my university career in ways I would not have predicted.

This is the old debates chamber on the first floor of the Union although this picture is taken from the Gallery one floor up. This has been host to many debates, of course, but also the likes of Reef, Supergrass, Jools Holland, Jack Dee, Fred McAulay, Arcade Fire and Bombay Bicycle Club to name a few.

As I said... fond memories.

This is the Back Stair case which provides a short cut between levels and also hosts the "secret cupboard" which leads to the roof. It is a part of the Union that the punters never see and this staircase has seen some fairly incredulous antics over the years. Not to mention the time there was a homeless man living there without anyone knowing!
