How to shoot the Milky Way

Every single day I get asked pretty much the same question.... "How do I do a Milky Way shot like that?" And my response is a long one so I am writing this story to link people to the info they need.

First of all check for light pollution free areas to shoot, If you live in a big city you will need to travel far from the lights preferably putting the city behind you when facing the direction you are shooting. This site is helpful in choosing your area , you may need to google a different map for your area if you are not in the US ---- Dark Sky Finder

This leads me to knowing when and where the Milky Way is in the sky, or as you see in most of my photos the Galactic Center of the Milky Way Galaxy. For this I recommend this free software or if you have a droid phone the google sky map app can work if you know what stars to look for---- Stellarium
