I was born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1972. I'm a dentist, with PhD in Periodontology. Started to photograph my patients in the film era (early 90s), mostly macro shots of teeth/mouth before and after surgical procedures or specific clinical situations, only for didactical purpose. Had been teaching at a Dental School for 17 years.
Only in 2009 I decided to invest in a digital camera. Soon I realized how different it was from my old film camera. Started to photograph the nature in the neighborhoods during my free time, walking with my dogs. Birds and butterflies became an obsession in that time, and suddenly I was carrying a 70-300mm everywhere. I still enjoy to photograph wildlife!
I have been studying photography more seriously since 2011, when I received formal instruction at the University (unfortunately never concluded the graduate studies). A turning point happened when I started a personal project with starry night photography. Probably influenced by the Carl Sagan's Cosmos series, it became the next obsession. I won some amateur contests with my first images. It was challenging but also rewarding. Since 2011 I've been visiting the Atacama desert every year, my dark sky paradise.
In 2013, I visited the ALMA Observatory for the first time after showing them a time lapse project. After my initial results, I was invited to conduct night photography workshops as a recreational activity for their employees. It can be seen here: https://vimeo.com/121217646. Tribute to Carl Sagan (https://1x.com/photo/954825) was taken during one of those opportunities. Due to my contribution, I was invited to become an ESO Photo Ambassador in 2014 (http://www.eso.org/public/outreach/partnerships/photo-ambassadors/#aduro).
I love to travel with my wife! And we like the contrast between the civilized world, represented by historical cities with its ancient architecture, and the natural world, which have the power to remember us how small we really are.
