I was born in South Carolina and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. My passion for photography took form in 2004 in the beauty around Santa Barbara California, where I graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a B.S. in Computer Science. Since then, I have been a software engineer and startup founder in San Francisco, most notably starting a tech company, Fanvibe (founded by Y Combinator and other investors), which was acquired in 2011 by BeRecruited Inc.
When I wasn't coding, I would be taking photos.
My photography since 2004 has been very photo journalistic and I approach any type of photography with the focus on telling a story. I organized many photo walks, at least one a week, and started a group based around Flickr called the San Francisco Bay Area Shooters (SFBAS). Soon I branched out into the photography communities of Google+, 500px, and Instagram.
Because of my technical background and product oriented interests (and admittedly obsessions), I researched and worked on products around photography. The tech and topics ranged from photo discovery algorithms to photo social community ecosystems. I plan to develop products in the future that take advantage of advancements in technology today, as well as discovering and implementing new exploratory products in the world of photography.
Aside from photography as being just a hobby and a market to build cool products around, I absolutely fell in love with wedding, portrait, and event photography. I began joining pro photographers as a secondary wedding photographer, and was invited to be the primary photographer at destination weddings, like one in the Swiss Alps. I wanted to further improve my abilities to photograph people, and began working with many models in portrait photography in a photo journalistic and candid approach. I began seeing people photography as more than just a visual photograph, but a story telling moment in time. And to further improve and expand my photography, I photographed many events with charities, good cause organizations, and more. All of these together really improve and polish my skills perpetually, and I'm always looking for more.
Photography for me will be forever a learning experience, and I'm always looking for new challenges and stories to tell.
