Photo Walk around Downtown Toronto

Published April 22nd, 2012

Headed out with my friend Ryan for a photo walk around downtown. Splitting it up into two stories.

This is the first photo walk I've done with another photographer, and the first shoot I've used my new circular polarizing filter. The weather was, frankly, pretty shitty. We headed out too early, about 4pm, on a highly overcast day. It was also pretty chilly, so we cut it off around 8.

This is actually right down the street from me - I've been planning on shooting this for a while now.

I cropped the photo so the wave looks like wave can go forever, but isn't pretending it's anything but graffiti.

First time playing with the circular polarizing filter. Took a dozen shots or so of this building. Played with it a bit in post - struggled a lot with the crop angle.

Struggled to take this shot. These fish are typically underwater, but there's no water in the fountain this time of year. While Ryan took a pretty impressive shot close-up, I opted to try the wider angle approach (I don't have a long zoom lens, yet).

Tried an open aperture to give a sense of depth to the fish. Also used some creative cropping. I like the result, but it lacks punch.

Couldn't resist this one.

Had a lot of fun with my 50mm f/1.4 lens. I played with this scene and took more than a dozen angles.

Took everyone's advice to get right down with some fun angles (also trying not to centre subjects so evidently). I like this one the best.

Another one with my 50mm f/1.4 lens. This was closer to the end of the walk, so the evening light was just getting good.

Some slight cropping and saturation adjustment, and that's it. Handheld at 1/30" was hard, but most of the capture is blurry anyway.

The last one is my favourite. Love it.

Whenever I try to capture any complex situation like the fishes, I find it makes it a lot easier just to focus on a few details and get everything else out of the shot. I've never successfully been able to capture 'the whole picture' in one shot.

nice work with the off-centre subjects. the depth of field is really working well, particularly in the last 2 shots.
can't wait to see part 2!

I'm really liking these 'up the side of a building' shows you're doing. Interested to see the second half!
