Getting better at Photoshop

Published August 2nd, 2012

I've been trying to improve my processing and photoshop skills lately, and the videos by Aaron Nace of Phlearn on the 500px blog are helping a lot. I tried the most recent tutorial this morning, and in about two minutes of photoshop, I was able to dramatically improve one of my photos.

This took a very little amount of effort, but I just didn't know what I was doing. And now I do :)

Old & Busted

This is the same photo I uploaded a while ago, which people complained was out of focus. They're right, of course: the petals are far too blurry. But what I liked about it was the centre of the flower and how crisp it was.

New Hottness

Here's the same photo with the same sharpening and everything, only it's had some treatment described in the Sharpening video I linked to earlier applied to it. I really love how a little bit of extra work was able to express the idea of the photo I was trying to portray in a much better way.

Yes, the petals are still out of focus, but it's much more obvious that the centre of the flower is where everything's happening.
