“Modern Geisha” For VEUX Magazine, August 2012
“Modern Geisha” was the idea and inspiration of my good friend and stylist/designer – Jen Summers. we planned it properly and she put together the pieces, went vintage shopping and brought the great props. Codi Babcock @ M Model Management, West Hollywood, was our casted model for this mission and nothing was better than having amazing Berenice Gallegos as the makeup artist/hair person to be on my set.
The location was at my parents house, where my mom holding all this authentic and original Asian pieces of Buddha’s sculptures, chinese props, Gong(!), furniture and many more. so thank you mom! Codi’s boyfriend brought the katana swords and with all the put together of Jen we build up the story.
Night before i had Berenice asking me if there is a place for Daniel, the assistant to join her on the ride and it was my pleasure to have him on set and assisting me, extra talented photographer himself.
Because of the concept, the idea, the color palate of my location, the styling, the makeup/hair and the mood i choose to use 2 primary color gels for the shoot – RED and YELLOW, which in some place created orange. as we know, culture wise, the asian countries are “the countries of the rising sun”.
Bellow you can see the lighting setup.
So, its not a secret, and i’m writing this post from a Cafe, in the middle of Paris, while waiting for my laundry to be done drying down the street, i made it as easier to read and to figure.
If it’s chinese for you, so you should go back and read the book, and if you know what the diagram saying, so you will already know just from looking at the images. =)
but yes, i used 2 grided heads on cross or both sides of the model, than just to fill the middle and to focus better on the clothes, the style and the fashion i filled it with 1-2 stop down grided beauty dish. why grids? because i love them. why? i have no idea. contrast, mood, drama, spotting it, control the light better. matter of taste.
Thanks to a great team work and after a long creative day we called it a wrap.
nothing will be the same without this kind of people on set, motivational, creative, ambition and patient.
