Things I like to do

Published August 4th, 2011

When I am taking pictures for the fun of it, as opposed to family snapshots, there are things I like to do. Shooting closeups and macros are among my favourites but the thing I like to do the most is shoot into the light. I like the play of shadows and light. It may not be the correct way to shoot things but it is one of my favourites.

Finding time

If there is a limiting factor in any pass time it is time. Whether it is running, drawing or photography finding the time is frequently the most difficult part of any endeavor. It isn't only finding the time to go to where you want to take pictures it is also downloading, classifying and in the rare case that I have a good shot the processing to make it look the way I want it to look.

In all honesty the post process where I take a picture into Photoshop and adjust the colour balance and lighting makes me wonder if I am somehow cheating. When I crop a picture close in on just one person's face does that mean that I am lying about the photo? Is using Photoshop lying or is it the same thing as photographers used to do in the darkroom?

Organizing

Published July 27th, 2011

I am trying to figure out how to organize my photos. There are so many. Family photos, snap shots, track and field, football, flowers, wildlife, architecture....the list goes on and on. I am thinking that dividing by category then by year/month/day might be the best way to go. The problem with that is that when you know you have a photo of something trying to track it down can be a little difficult. For instance I know I have an early shot of the gazebo in Pine Beach Park swathed in fog and cannot find the shot. Currently I classify everything by year/month/day but that doesn't help me find stuff. Then there are the special projects which span months and sometimes years like the heart project which started in 2010 and is still going. Eventually I will get it sorted into something I can handle.

What I like

Published July 26th, 2011

I like to take pictures of everything but I do have favourite subjects. Faces, flowers and architectural detail and sporting events (especially track and field). Mostly I use a point and shoot but do have a DSLR. DSLR are frequently cumbersome and heavy to carry around. A point and shoot is easy to carry and it means I always have a camera with me. Currently, having lost my 1200IS, I am using a Canon E1 more than my XTi though I got some really good shots at a track meet recently with the XTi and a consumer grade 300 mm lens. Mostly I just like to take pictures and am looking to hone my skills so I become a better photographer.
