Experiment #1

Published September 23rd, 2012

Inspired by some of the effects I saw on 500px, I decided to try some image processing. I've added the original image and the two images I used as overlays.

The end result

This is how the end result looks, as an experiment I rather like it. It has a nice colour, weathered look, but still the perspective remains. The rest of the images show how this was created.

Original image

Not a very exciting image, but nice perspective... I decided to fire up The Gimp and do something creative with it.

BW and blur

After converting to BW and adding blur. My idea was to use this image as an overlay for the original, to create (with several more steps) a sort of HDR effect.

Rust

When looking at the BW image, I though it would be nice to create a sepia like effect and remembered an image of a rusty column I took some time ago.

Added this layer to the image with 67% dodge.

Grain and slight vignetting

The image was a bit light at the edges, so I decided to add a little vignetting using this image.

The image has a mask that makes the center completely transparent and the corners/edges less so. I converted it to BW to keep the nice rusty colours.

And I applied it to the image with 12% subtract.
