Graphic designer and amateur photographer
Cara Gallardo Weil is graphic designer with a passion for iPhone photography. She was born in Hong Kong to Filipino parents who moved there in the early 60s to work in publishing. Her early life was spent in Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines. She studied graphic design in London and spent more than 20 years there before returning to Hong Kong, where she currently resides.
Her work has been included in several exhibitions including ‘Hipstamatic!’ at the Kunsthall Museum, Rotterdam (2011), the LA Mobile Arts Festival, Santa Monica, App Wars Exhibition, San Diego and ‘Strawberry Fields: Memories of Childhood’ at the Fotoloft Gallery, Moscow, Russia (2012), MPA ‘#4 Seconds’ exhibition at the Obscura Gallery in Melbourne (2013), the MPA ‘Shadow Stories: The Art of Mobile Black & White’ exhibition at SOHO Arthouse, NYC and the Holcim Gallery, Toronto (2014), The MIRA Mobile Prize exhibitions (2014 and 2015), Oporto, Portugal, and Decisive: New Currents in Street Photography at the 16 Mile Arts Gallery, Milton, Ontario (2016)
Her work has received honorable mentions in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in the Mobile Photography Awards (MPA). She also won First Place in the Nature and Wildlife category of the 2015 Mobile Photography Awards. She is a regular columnist with ‘Streets Ahead’, a women’s street photography collective on the AppWhisperer website. She has also been featured regularly in Hipstamatic’s Snap magazine.
“I like to shoot with my iPhone as it gives me the ability to be spontaneous, to work discreetly and to catch moments of life without being obtrusive. Having access to different apps opens up many creative possibilities – one can push an image to the limit or keep it simple.”
