Believe it or not, despite having grown-up and spent most of my life in Toronto (well, Markham/Unionville to be precise), this was only my third time ever attending the CNE. I had never really been a fan of paying exorbitantly high prices just to spend my entire day standing in lines, with only a few brief but glorious lineup-free moments peppered throughout the day. But when I learned that Toronto Photo Walks, of which I am a quasi-regular, was teaming up with 500px for a day of photo-partying at the Ex, how could I say no? Just for the record, I'm also a real sucker for free stuff so the promise of free swag from the 500px crew was just way too much for me to resist.
So with a loaded camera bag over my shoulder and a tripod on my back, I headed out the door. I then hastily headed right back inside, realizing there was absolutely no way I could carry all that gear around the entire day. So I unloaded some lenses and off I went again.

Well, I've done it! I have finally joined 500px, a decision that's been met with a 60/40 split of excitement and shame. Don't get me wrong; I am ecstatic to now be a member of a wonderful community of truly incredible artists and I am still perpetually floored by the photographs I see every time I visit the site. But the sheer talent on 500px can be intimidating and this is the very reason for the 40 of the aforementioned 60/40 emotional split. My joining 500px has rekindled memories of my days growing up, trying continually to tag along with and impose on my older sisters and their friends whom I looked up to and from whom I so desperately sought approval. At the time, I persisted despite the realization that I didn't quite fit in. And to some small extent, I suspect the same holds true for 500px and I today.
But who knows? Perhaps I'll feel differently as I mature as a photographer. For now what I do know is that 500px is the best online community to help me do so. The quality ...
