Originally from Southern California, Coleman Scott Moffett has lived and worked throughout the U.S. and currently resides in the Mount Washington Valley of New Hampshire. This diversity of experience has helped him mold a free flowing mix of vibrant colors and starkly toned monochromes into a singular artistic vision. A proponent of expressionism in photography, Cole strives to capture the subjective aspects of a scene; inviting the onlooker to share his personal understanding of what the photograph encapsulates. He has a great appreciation for the grand scale but is equally at home discovering and photographing the simple, unadorned segments of everyday life. Largely self-taught, Coleman has also studied with Greg Heisler and Jay Maisel.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO PHOTOGRAPH?
Over the years, I've worked in film, video and digital imagery. I love the natural world and landscape photography is one of my favorite genres. I’m also drawn to abstract and conceptual images, because of the singular freedom they can provide. Photographing people has its own rewards. Having been a Clinical Social Worker, I appreciate the value of bringing out that unique something that helps establish each person's character.
WHAT IMPACT HAS DIGITAL EQUIPMENT HAD ON YOUR WORK?
Digital cameras and computer software have allowed me to broaden my artistic view. I still shoot film as well and depend heavily on the techniques I leaned with film. Overall, creating an image I like and believe in supersedes any allegiance I have to a particular set of tools.
QUOTES THAT GUIDE YOU IN YOUR WORK
"Visual ideas combined with technology combined with personal interpretation equals photography. Each must hold its own; if it doesn't, the thing collapses."
"Each precise object or condition or combination or process exhibits a beauty..."
--Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass
“Nature is not only all that is visible to the eye... it also includes the inner pictures of the soul.” -- Edvard Munch
