Hitting Editor's Pick really works!

Published April 6th, 2012

One of my pictures got selected for Editor's Picks. Within hours it had more than 1k visitors, currently running at well over 3k visitors. Unbelievable traffic this Section of 500px generates.

Gorillas work!

Published March 31st, 2012

I knew it. Cute animals always work on photography sites. I was very surprised to wake up this morning and find my latest picture "Real Man's Adventure" had received more than 800 views. On closer inspection I found this to be due to the fact that the picture had made it into the Editor's Choice section. That sure boosted its view count. So you see it is true: animal shots work on photo sites. :-))

Don't look at my pictures!

Published November 1st, 2011

I figured out why the score on individual pictures goes down continually. 500px reduces the score with every visitor who views the picture without rating it. So if you plan to just look at my work - don't. Please vote on my work and help me break through the 500px visibility barrier.

Of course I am only kidding. Please enjoy my pictures any way you feel suits you. :-)

About time

Published November 1st, 2011

Since it is not possible to change the EXIF data on 500px itself, or change the date of posting, I figured it is worth discovering at what time posting your pictures yields the highest rate of viewers.

First of all, I believe weekdays are not as productive as weekends. Friday seems to be a particularly good day. Saturday is nearly equal, but Sunday is falling off already. I live in CET land, meaning the Central European Time Zone. If I post my shots during daytime it is not as productive as posting them in the evening. Best after 21:00 hours.

Friday or Saturday at about 21:00 seems the best time to post pictures if you want to stand some chance for visitors to see them in the "fresh" section as they get posted, and with a bit of luck, attract enough positive voters to make it into the upcoming section. From there with luck the popular section, and if the gods will it the editor's picks.

That is a tremendously long route to get your work noticed. And so far I've not cracked it with ...

Haters welcome

Published October 23rd, 2011

I have seen some pictures posted on 500px lamenting the dislike button and all the haters and detractors out there making effective use of it. I see the same phenomenon on my pictures. First the rating goes up and then it goes down again significantly. This way of course my pictures will never make it into the "mainstream" where more folks could see them. I have been thinking a lot about the question whether this bothers me or not. When I started posting pictures on the internet I did it for attention and recognition, I think. I wanted the admiration that sites like flickr afford, provided you invest in your social interactions. However, as time goes by I find that motive more questionable. I comment on your work when you comment on mine. A society of mutual admiration. Is that really what I want out of this? Not really. I want to know whether my work is good enough for others to like it for the simple reason that they get something out of it, not because I post nice comments on their ...

Ouch that hurt (a bit)

Published September 21st, 2011

Just cleared out some shots that I felt were not really up to scratch. Man that's hard to do. Still many shots in the portfolio that are not up to scratch but I will need some time to build up courage to let them go. Bear with me.

A little gratuitous

Published September 21st, 2011

Benoit is right. He commented on one of my pictures that he felt that some of my manipulations were a bit gratuitous, read unnecessary, unwarranted. Although I like many of my creations I am still not nearly selective enough and I am presenting many works that truly are not up to scratch when compared to the best out there. Honest comments like Benoit's help me realise that and at the same time make me want to improve my game. I must admit that critical comments are hard for me to accept at first. I don't think I handle criticism that well. Then again any criticism levelled at my work makes me stop and think. And that is what it is all about.

Flickr is another picture sharing site I post my work to. Folks there are very nice and always comment in a very positive way. I admit that flickr comments are a welcome bath of attention for someone like me who craves this public attention. At the same time none of these comments help me distinguish the good from the bad and that makes it hard t ...

How to find friends on here?

Published September 19th, 2011

I really like the way 500px presents my pictures. The whole social side of things, however, is not so brilliant today. Finding friends, exchanging with friends, finding an audience generally still needs a lot of thinking and working on. Of course I want my pictures presented excellently, and the site surely does that, but to whom am I showing my pictures, if nobody has any means of discovering them, and I have no means to present them to an audience?

Freshly discovered

Published September 2nd, 2011

Today I discovered 500px. Sad to say it took me so long. The work of artists from around the world represented here is stunning and overwhelming. I will start to upload some of my own work soon. My work is non-commercial and consists mostly of Photoshop composites. I do them in my spare time just for fun. Hope you like them.
