American from the Jersey shore, but been living in the UK since the late sixties. English and Media Studies teacher, recently retired and loving it. Very pleased to be officially an Old Age Pensioner as of my sixtieth birthday four years ago - hence qualifying for a free bus pass. The Nikon D90 was my first DSLR and it was love at first sight, despite the steep learning curve, from point-and-shoot to ISO, aperture and shutter speed. As of March 2011, I bought a second-hand D700 and found out what real love is. I'm keeping my D90, however. It's lighter and feels like an old friend. I'll photograph anything from buskers and the contents of bric-a-brac shops, to my grandchildren or strangers on the tube. Anything is up for grabs, but I tend to take more portraits than anything else. The human face. Can you ever get tired of it?
  • Nikon D700, Nikon D90, Olumpus E-M5,
  • 105mm f2.8, 85mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 35mm f2, 80-200 pull/push, plus a ton I don't use
  • Gary Fong stuff, SB-600,

Ode to 500px

Published March 5th, 2012

Oh 500px, I think the word "improvement" means something different to you than it does to me, and the other mortals that use this service. Wall went away and then came back, but to get to it you have to do many complicated things now. And where oh where has Activity gone? I am now reduced to reading my emails to find out why my score has inched up a tad. And flow was such a silly idea, it doesn't bear thinking about.

What is a word that means the exact opposite of "improvement" I ask myself. That would be something like: "worsen, downgrade, fracture, destroy, ruin, spoil, undo, shatter, smash, deteriorate, decay, disintegrate, degenerate, go bad, decline, malfunction." Pick any of those.

The Jury is stil out!

Published February 23rd, 2012

Not sure I'm loving the new 'improved' 500px. It's better than it was last night, but I still have some issues. For instance, where's 'Activity?' or its equivalent? In the past that's where I went first, to see if anyone had written on my wall (no wall now) and to see if any of my shots had been commented upon or faved/liked. Then I could repay the compliment. Now while I can see that my score has gone up, I can't see a way to find out why, unless I click on each shot to see if there are new comments. Not something I have time for. And I want my wall back!
