I was introduced to street photography by a friend when I was 15 years old in the mid 70's. I used one of his Pentax and when the evening came we rushed to the dark room and revealed our "catches of the day". The magic of the first night in the darkroom transformed me. Throughout the 80's I avidly walked the streets with a Nikon F similar to the one displayed by Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now (still have to scan all those negatives). I came back to photography a few years ago to continue my search for "snapshots" in the streets of the cities I visit. The contribution of images to the remembrance of things past is of foremost need, either to capture the life on the street, a face or an apparently insignificant detail that might reveal more about life.

The real richness of this site: Your Friends

Published October 28th, 2011

In an earlier post, I highlighted the pleasure of reaching a hundred "Affections". Indeed, what a pleasure it was to get feedback from photographers from all over the worlds on some of the pictures that you took and never dared to show to anyone before. After one hundred, you start contemplating the fact that you might reach a thousand "Affections" before you get too old to understand how your computer works anymore.

After the few first pictures I posted, I realized that people start following your work and that you can also follow their work. These people were called "Friends" and were from all over the world. Oh, and they were giving you "Affection". I had heard that the internet was the place to go to find "affection" but not in return for posting pictures you thought would interest no one but your mother (if she still bothers). What is really great is that since your friends are from all over the world, you receive affection at various times of the day and night. You woul ...

100 signs of Affection

Published September 9th, 2011

I joined 500px a little bit over a week ago and liked the site instantly. The quality of the posts and the friendliness of the participants was a real joy. After the initial loading of the 20 allowed pictures, I could hardly wait till the next week. On the second week, I realized that I was not going to wait any longer and decided to become "Awesome". With the privileges of this status, I started to build a basic portfolio with some subsections that I called "Les rues de Montréal", "Les rues de Munich" and "Les rues de Paris" to showcase pictures taken in the 3 cities where I spend most of my time. The thrill of realizing that very talented photographers from all over the world would comment on my pictures and even send me signs of "Affection" was indeed awesome! Ironically, the picture that received the 100th sign of "Affection" was entitled "The chosen One", displayed in the Munich subsection.

Vente trottoir rue Mont-Royal (street fair)

Published September 7th, 2011

Twice a year, there is a "vente trottoir" (street fair) on Rue Mont-Royal in Montreal. On labor day week-end, the street is closed to automobiles for a stretch of about 1 Km and welcomes pedestrians. I just went through for some errands and took these pictures. I was just trying to see if the Nikon D700 with the 24 mm f1.4 was a good combo for street photography. Ever since I have the Fuji X100, the D700 shutter seems so loud.
