I took up photography relatively late in life in 2009 - enthusiastic amateur, entirely self taught through reading many books, magazines, web sites etc. I spent 3 years participating in club competition photography but I have decided to give that a rest for a while - I found it tended to stifle my artistic creativity - taking photos for the judges rather than for myself.
I have really enjoyed experimenting with long exposure work for the past few of years using Lee filters. I particularly love to capture seascapes as wall art and not necessarily as true reflections of reality - hence the slightly abstract, sometimes surreal approach to some of my work. I do minimal Photoshop processing, with every shot being a single exposure - no blending or layers used although I do use colour temperature to bring out dramatic feel in some shots.
My favourite landscape locations have to be East Lothian, Northumberland, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands. All time heroes - Ansel Adams and Joe Cornish. I think it was Joe who once said, "I take photographs for my own interest and if anyone else likes them, then that's a bonus." Which is exactly how I approach it and it works for me!
I'm always looking for that elusive seascape location that nobody else has visited yet - which isn't easy!
I also really enjoy doing some street work during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. There's always some great opportunities and amazing characters there.
Thanks for looking and please feel free to contact me with any comments.
