A Journey Through the Chapada Diamantina National Park

Published June 19th, 2012

In early June 2012, I rented a car and made my way to see the famous national park Chapada Diamantina, located in central Bahia (Brazil). Time to tell a story!

(Thanks to the folks at 500PX for providing this amazing stories feature!)

The place to start. Our pousada was located at the end of the street you see in this picture.
Lençóis itself offers fantastic authentic cultural lifestyle and some excellent restaurants.

Cool Blue Reason

Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil
The perfect way to end the first day: Enjoying a fantastic sunset. Taken from the top of the Pai Inácio.

Poço Azul

Located in the western area, this cave offers crystal clear water. If you follow all the rules and keep it clean, you are even allowed to go for a swim.

I've never seen water being this clear. Might be due to it's slight sour pH.

Again, the fanstatic view from the Pai Inácio.

The Descent

Next up was visiting the Gruta Torrinha, one of the largest cavesystems nature has to offer.
14 kilometers of dark mazes lie in front of us, waiting to get explored. Goosebumps!

Inside The Gruta Torrinha

No power, just gaslights!

Inside The Gruta Torrinha II

These groovy stone formations are the result of water carving through stones for several centuries.

The Ascent

Done. After three hours of crawling, climbing and walking - finally seeing daylight again.

Time to Go Home

Back in Lençóis. Time to make my way back home to Salvador da Bahia. Not in this car, though :-(
