Elliott McCrory

I am a scientist at Fermilab and an amateur photographer. I started as the high school newspaper and yearbook photographer in the 1970s, and worked for the Tufts University (MA, USA) newspaper from 1976-1979. I have thousands of rolls of Tri-X negatives in my basement--I'd sure like a nice scanner (and several months of free time) to get them digitized. 2013's New Years's Resolution was to post one photo per day to 500px. Search for "empod" (for Elliott McCrory Photo Of the Day).

Temporary equipment change

Published August 23rd, 2013

I have sent my Canon 7D to Virginia for a cleaning. There are also a couple of small problems which I hope they'll address. In the mean time, I have rented the Canon EOS Rebel Sl1 (100D). This little (minuscule!) DSLR is quite amazing! It is tiny, quiet, responsive and it has a noticeably improved sensor over my 7D. And it focuses while recording a movie!

Tokina Lenses

Published June 21st, 2013

The big pleasant surprise in this, my "365 project," is the quality of my two Tokina lenses.

Today's picture (pinned here) was with the surprising Tokina 35mm f/2.8D X Macro, which I picked up for a song from eBay. It is great at f/2.8; it provides a very natural angle of view for my APS-C Canon 7D; it gets all the way down to true 1:1 macro; and when I stop it down at 1:1. the depth of field is quite deep. This image is at f/9.

The other lens is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 DX. The other shot pinned here, from the 14th, was with this lens at 11mm, f/7.1.

I try to post only pictures here that pass the pixel-peek test, and my Tokina lenses get high marks.

A Popular Photo!

Published June 18th, 2013

Yesterday's Photo of the Day broke through to a 500px.com "Popular" photo! I am so very happy to have finally gotten there.

I must admit that I was not at all sure about this photo at first. But last night when I was looking for a photo to post, this one caught my eye in a way that it did not on the day I took it. Hurray for that.

I strive to make more pictures like this.

My pix are not registering as FRESH

Published April 25th, 2013

Two days in a row, I have submitted my EMPOD and they never appear on the "Fresh" list on 500px.com. Usually, I can watch my picture start near the beginning, and within a couple of minutes (sometimes less than a minute) it has left the second page.

I have sent a complaining email to the management, and I await their reply.

Not that I have had very many "Upcoming" pix (I have has exactly one out of the 116 days in 2013), but my picture certainly won't be upcoming if it does not appear in the normal channels (e.g., the "Fresh" page)!
