The McRangers

Published June 12th, 2012

Every Year in May in the village neighbouring mine Highland Games are organized.

The participants are 12 teams of Belgians pretending to be Scotsmen for 1 day and competing each other in a number of different disciplines. Each team consists of 6 members, of which at least one woman.

While I was shooting the participants one team in particular caught my attention, both because of their attitude which was enthusiastic as well as very competitive in an primitive way, but also because of the way they had made up their faces. For the connaisseurs among you, it isn't the English St. George they put on their face...the cross was blue in stead of red.

I really enjoyed following them, and this story tells about that one day in the life of the McRangers in May 2012. And if you want to know how well they did in the competition...they finished third. And as you can see from the star on their shirt, they already won the event once in the past.

Highland Games

The McRangers

Doing a slalom, dressed in kilts, while carrying two team members, and this against the clock...I know better things to do on a warm spring taking pictures.

Carrying Logs

One of the disciplines is to carry two logs over a distance of 200 meters as fast as possible. If you drop a log you have to run back to the start line, where the rest of the team is waiting, and another team member has to take over. Needless to say that this guy made the full 200 meters.

McTiger & McFish

Assessing the other teams.

Peer Coaching

One of the McRangers running along with McDakke to encourage him to complete the whole 200 metres. If McDakke drops the logs, another team member has to come and pick them up...luckily he didn't.

Drinking beer is as much a part of the games as the different disciplines are...but then again it was really hot that day.

McDakke after carrying logs for 200 metres. He was completely exhausted and McSvekke and McFish came in for the, they didn't.

McSvekke & McTiger

Taking a break, and a beer and a smoke.

Another upskirt shot of one of the McRangers guys, this time McDakke.
This shot was actually taken right after the resuscitation shot.

This guy has been laughing all day...showing that the whole event was at least as much about fun as it was about winning. The true Olympic spirit.
